What Exactly Is A Garden Box Blade Scraper

Thanks for stopping by and checking out our Best Box Blade Scraper 2019 Review Guide. What exactly is a garden box blade scraper? The garden box blade scraper is actually a pretty common garden tractor attachment mainly because of the many different uses.

While the box blade scraper isn’t the perfect tool for every job they are a great multi purpose attachment. A well built box blade scraper can be as a backward scrape blade or a forward scrape blade. If slotted for scarifier tines they also make a great scarifier or even a tiller plow combo.

Don’t get me wrong if your main goal is to level driveways then you would be better off with a land leveler. However if you are looking for something with a bit more versatility to accomplish a number of different tasks the box blade scraper might be a perfect solution.

Garden Box Blade Buyers Guide

Always a good idea to plan ahead so here’s you a garden box blade buyers guide to help you out. First thing you want to consider before buying a garden box blade scraper is what will be your main use and is the box blade scraper really the right attachment for the job.

If your main goal is to plow snow and nothing else then you really want a snow plow. On the other hand if you plan on doing a number of things such as grading land, spreading mulch, or prepping a garden then a box blade scraper is what you are after.

So you’ve decided you need garden box blade scraper and you want to make sure you get the most for your money. I don’t blame you as some box blades can cost over a thousand dollars.

Box Blade Scrapers Need To Be Built To Last

Garden box blade scrapers need to be built to last as they can take a beating being dragged along the ground and pushing debris around. You want to make sure the welds are solid and the steel frame is sturdy. Having your box blade fall apart after a few uses would not sit well with your wallet.

The quality of hinges is worth looking at as well as the way shanks are attached to the box blade. For example if the shanks are held on by metal brackets vs inserted into slots cut out in the bar. Those held on by brackets are sure to break off after getting snagged on a root or rock sticking out of the ground. The box blades with slots cut out for the shanks offer a lot more support.

Another thing to keep in mind is the size of your tractor or mower that’ll be using the box blade. You want the width of the box blade to be slightly exceeding the outside diameter of your tractors back tiers. Horse power could also be a factor to consider.

If possible ensure that the scrape blades are removable and reversible. Offset slots are also a nice feature. For the higher priced box blade scrapers look for reinforced plating on the side walls for more support.

Make sure you take shipping into consideration when pricing box blades because of the weight you might end up with an extra hundred dollar fee that you were not expecting. A lot of times they need to be shipped to a business that has access to a forklift.

Extra fees may applied when you have it shipped directly to your home so make sure to read over all of the shipping policies.

Different Uses For Box Blades

Below is just a few common uses for box blades but I’m sure there are a lot more that aren’t mentioned here. Please feel free to comment below on some of the ways you use or plan to your box blade.

  • Land grading
  • Scraping snow off roads and driveways
  • Making brush piles
  • Condensing burn piles
  • Leveling driveways
  • Filling mud holes
  • Spreading mulch
  • Tilling a garden
  • Prepping a garden
  • Making trails
  • Moving gravel or dirt

How To Use A Box Blade

While there are many different things a box blade can be used for the primary use of a box blade is for spreading material like soil and gravel. Leveling, grading, and back filling are also popular uses of a box blade.

Weather you are using a box blade in a garden, work site, or on a driveway expect to make mistakes while learning because it takes time and practice to become skilled at using a box blade.

First things first always read the Operator’s Manual (I know most people don’t but it’s for your own safety!)

It helps to start with something simple such as moving dirt till you get more comfortable with handling your box blade. Before you start be sure to adjust your top link so the front and rear of the cutting blades are just touching the ground unless you plan on digging. To dig downwards a little adjust the top link so the blade is angled forward a bit.

We recommend getting use to your box blade with out using the scarifiers at first. This is to help ensure you don’t damage your box blade or your tractor.

How To Use Box Blade Scarifiers

Maybe you have some hard ground that isn’t draining or a large hump in your yard that needs leveling. The scarifiers are great for breaking up ground. Before you use your scarifiers make sure the shanks are down and the locked position. You may also want to angle the blade forward slightly to help move the dirt.

If the ground is real hard it may be beneficial to go over the area a few time instead of trying to do it in one sweep. Also beware of your tractors horse power as you don’t want to break your box blade or your tractor. Trying to over power a lump of hard ground may cost you a lot more than you bargained for.

For leveling and smoothing an area make sure your box blade is flat and level on the ground from side to side. Extend the top link so the box blade is angled slightly up. Then set your 3-point hitch in “float” position.

This should allow your box blade to float along the ground allowing the rear blade to smooth the surface as you pass over it.

Another thing to remember is that anytime you fill in low spots or back fill in holes be sure to compact the area and add more fill if needed. Using running over the area with your tractor works pretty good.

As for maintenance always refer to your Operator’s Manual.

The most impressive thing about EA’s Xtreme Duty Compact Tractor Box Blade is the attention to details. Adding the extra support can make a wold of difference. On top of that the customer support is unmatched.

What We Don’t Like

Other than the cost, the biggest problem with this box blade attachment is the wait time to receive it. Currently they are at about 10 weeks from the date you place your order.

Summing Up

Even though the price is a little high the quality of this box blade is what makes it a top contented. If you live within the 1000 miles the free shipping is an added bonus. It’s definitively worth checking out. Just make sure you plan ahead and the wait time.

Best Undiscovered: King Kutter Box Blade

King Kutter Box Blade - 60in., Model# BB-60

To be honest I couldn’t find any reviews of the King Kutter Box Blade on Amazon. That’s why this is the best undiscovered box blade. It’s quality on par with the EA Box Blade. It’s lacking a few of the extra features but is still a great buy.

Designed for rough and rugged use by farmers, landscapers, homeowners, and in light construction. The King Kutter box blade works great for back filling, grading, landscaping, leveling, and many other applications.

One thing to point out that a well built box blades has the A-frame fully welded to the box blade like the King Kutter has. This allows for a lot stronger box blade over all and also means no assembly.

Includes 2 high carbon steel reversing cutting edges. One for the front and one for the rear of the box blade. They also mention a 20 inch specially formed self-cleaning moldboard. I wouldn’t put to much into the self cleaning part but the design does help prevent dirt and debris from building up.

Features Include

  • Heavy-duty, heat-treated ripper shanks with replaceable heat-treated teeth.
  • Shanks have 4 position adjustment holes that pin to reinforced frame.
  • 20 in. Specially formed self-cleaning moldboard
  • 2 High carbon steel reversing cutting edges.
  • 1/4 in. x 4 in. shank housing box with slotted holes and pins.
  • 1 Year Limited Warranty
  • Available from 48in – 72in

While we didn’t see any reviews on Amazon we did find some on a few other sites. This is one of the reasons we named this the Best Undiscovered Box Blades on the market. One customer mentioned that they used their box blade for the last 3 years doing garden and yard work and enjoyed how well it worked in harder soils.

One review gave it 1 out of 5 stars but complemented how well it was constructed and very easy to change over to other attachments. I’m guessing they meant to give it a higher star rating.

What We Liked

It may not have the extra support but it’s a solid well built frame. The carbon steel reversing cutting edges really add to the longevity of this blade. If you are an Amazon shopper looking for a great quality box blade this would make a perfect attachment.

What We Don’t Like

Aside from not having the extra support plates the one down side we saw with this attachments was the customer support was it or miss. Nothing against their product but King Kutters website wasn’t very helpful either.

Summing Up

If you are looking for a solid well built box blade you wouldn’t go wrong with a King Kutter box blade. Just cause it’s lacking in reviews doesn’t make it a bad choice more like undiscovered.

Best Amazon Buy: Titan Box Blade Tractor Attachment Scarifier Shank

Titan Box Blade Tractor Attachment Category 1 Cat 0 Scarifier Shank

The Titan Box Blade Tractor Attachment in my opinion is one of the best box blades sold on Amazon at least in the smaller sizes. It’s a close toss up between Titan and King Kutter but for the smaller sizes the Titan is a good choice.

While it’s nothing fancy it’s light weight, simple, and gets the job done. Well built with the shanks fitting into the 4″ x 4″ square tube for that extra support. Perfect for digging up and smoothing out gravel.

You can use the back cutting edge and roll-formed molboard like a bulldozer for extra pushing power or light digging. Turn around and drag your front cutting edge and scarifier teeth afterwards to smooth and finish the job.

The Titan Box Blade Scarifier is designed for light duty ripping however be careful not to go to fast when ripping. The higher the horse power the slower and easier you might want to take it.

Features Include

  • Massive 4″ x 4″ square tubing.
  • Dual 12mm steel braces.
  • Cutting teeth and 2 reversible and replaceable curved edges.
  • 17″ Deep roll-formed moldboard
  • 6.25mm Thick side-panels
  • Pin-style 3 point hitch
  • Up to 7 Shanks depending on the model size.
  • Available models in 4′, 5′, 6′, and 7′
  • Free Shipping

Even with the limited amount of reviews you can tell that the people that bought a Titan Box Blade where really pleased. Mentioning about how much they enjoyed it and how well it was built.

One recent customer talks about others being sold of the same quality and more money to to be sure to shop around. While another customer mentions they are very satisfied with their Titan Box Blade.

What We Liked

We like the fact that this box blade has a heavy duty build and even with it’s light weight frame it still holds up well. What we really liked about the Titan box blades is the shipping times compared to other products. Normally ships within a few weeks instead of a few months.

What We Don’t Like

Again like the King Kutter the Titan is missing out on the extra support and speaking of support a few comments on the larger sizes mentioned support was hard to get a hold of.

Like any big ticket item you want to make sure you are getting your money worth and as you can see with some of the reviews this box blade is a pretty good choice. Also something not mentioned before is that if you are purchasing on Amazon they offer 12 Month Financing!

Best Bargain Deal: Impact Implements Box Scraper

Impact Implements CAT-0 Box Scraper, 55 inch width

The Impact Implements CAT 0 Box Scraper is designed for your smaller tractors such as a garden tractor, lawn tractor, or even a 4 Wheeler. Basically anything with a CAT 0 Hitch / 3 Point attachment system installed.

The Impact Implements CAT 0 Box Scraper isn’t as tough and as strong as the other box blades listed in this review however it’s not meant to be. It’s designed to be light weight yet still usable and at an affordable cost.

Features Include

  • Reversible and replaceable blades.
  • 5 Inches of adjust-ability on the cutting tines.
  • 6 replaceable and height adjustable cutting ripper tines.
  • Intergrated 3 Point CAT 0 quick mount.
  • 8 Gauge stell 3 point frame
  • 10 Gauge steel main frame tube & formed back blade
  • Free Shipping

At almost half the cost you still get decent made box blade. If you are looking for something to play around with and do some light grading this isn’t a bad choice.

While I wouldn’t recommend digging to deep with the rippers, it should help dig up gravel in a drive way without any problems.

From looking at the reviews on Amazon it’s got decent reviews. Most that ordered an Impact Implements CAT 0 Box Scraper where happy with their purchase. As expected most new what they were getting for their money which helps.

What We Liked

The thing we liked the most about this box blade is the price of course. If you are looking to do some light yard work or grading this is a pretty good deal for the money.

Another thing we like it’s got a CAT O 3pt hitch which is great for those who have smaller tractors or all terrain vehicles such as a 4 wheeler.

The Free Shipping is always nice as well. Impact Implements even offers a neat lift system for ATVs that might be worth checking out.

What We Don’t Like

Well to keep the cost down Impact Implements had to cut corners and the quality of the steel could of been a bit stronger. Also the fact that they didn’t cut out slots for the rippers on the tube and welded holders makes for a lot weaker design.

Obviously the design and quality is going to due to the cost and even though it’s not the greatest box blade you can buy for the money and those with small tractors it can be a great help around the house.

Best Tow Behind Box Scraper: Brinly Sleeve Hitch Tow Behind Box Scraper

Brinly BS-38BH Sleeve Hitch Tow Behind Box Scraper, 38-Inch

The Brinly BS-38BH Sleeve Hitch Tow Behind Box Scraper is the perfect attachment for lawnmowers and 4 wheelers. Designed for landscaping, gardening, and yard work.

Got a small hill in your yard that you need to level or some small roots you need digging up but you don’t have a tractor? This could be the attachment for you. It’s also decent at scraping shallow snow off drive ways.

Great for removing unwanted debris and falling tree limbs or perhaps you need to spread out some gravel or filling in some mud holes. Usually priced under $200 bucks this tow behind box scraper is a great deal.

One of the features on this includes a weight tray which is great for doing some of those tougher grading and leveling jobs.

Features Include:

  • Made In USA
  • 2-in-1 Design
  • Heavy Duty Steel
  • Weight Tray
  • 30° Angle
  • Only 74 Pounds
  • 2 Year Warranty
  • Free Shipping

Keep in mind this is not designed to be an industrial grade box blade. It’s for light yard and garden work and to be pulled behind something with low horse power.

A subcompact tractor or even a 4 wheeler could bent this thing easy if pulled to fast. On the other hand it’s the perfect attachment for a lawn mower.

Lots of reviews on Amazon about this product and a lot of customers really recommend this product. Of course there are a few negative comments and after looking over them it seems that for the most part the faults were because of the way they were using the scraper.

Again this is not meant to be a large scale box blade and to be used for those light and smaller tasks.

What We Like

Like the Impact Implements Box Scraper the price is what makes this such a great deal. Yes it lacks the quality build of the more expensive box blades but it’s designed for a garden tractor / lawn mower. Another reason we really like the Brinly BS-38BH Sleeve Hitch Tow Behind Box Scraper is because it does exactly what it claims.

What We Don’t Like

Not going to complain about the quality because it’s not really a bad build for what it’s designed for however after reading over the reviews there where a number of complaints about not receiving all the nuts and bolts.

Sure it’s not a big deal to run down to the hardware store and get what you need but you shouldn’t have to.

While it might of allowed for to much weight but extending the weight tray to allow it to carry a little extra weight would of been nice to.

It may look cheap and well that’s because it is cheap but that’s not always a bad thing. If used as expected the Brinly BS-38BH Tow Behind Box Scraper is a great tool for working in the garden, on the lawn, and even a little drive way repair work.

The small size of this scraper comes in real handy when working in tight areas. This scraper comes in real handy when you need to scrape some snow off your sidewalk.

Not For Everyone: Agri-Fab 45-0265 Ground-Engaging Attachment Sleeve Hitch Scraper

We list the Agri-Fab 45-0265 Ground-Engaging Attachment Sleeve Hitch Scraper Box as not for everyone because it’s really not. Honestly this attachment got pretty bad reviews.

Looking over the reviews a number of customers complained about the welds broke on the first time use. This is normally a good sign of pool quality.

For the price we recommend the Brinly Sleeve Hitch Tow Behind Box Scraper as we feel it’s a much better product. This product is not for everyone. Whit that said it we felt it was worth listing because it might fit the needs of someone and at the end it might just be exactly what you are looking for.

Features Include:

  • 42 Inch working width
  • 3/16″ Steel blade
  • 30 Degree angle adjustment
  • 3 Year limited consumer warranty

This scraper is designed for garden tractors and lawn mowers with the sleeve hitch. The box scraper can be converted into a real leveling blade along with being angled to roll dirt or snow off to the side.

With a number of mixed reviews we found that some really liked it and some didn’t. Out of those that didn’t like the product and gave it bad reviews were about 50% valuable. What I mean by that is one complained about not receiving the hitch pin and gave it one star.

That doesn’t really help rate the product while another gave it one star because of it being poorly packaged. Okay then.

On the other hand if you look at the positive reviews, they added some good insight and seemed to really like the product which is why we decided to list it here.

What We Like

It’s nice to have choices and it does give us another choice in the garden tractor / lawn mower tow behind scraper attachments. Again it’s not for everyone but if it fits your needs than great.

The company offers a 3 year limited consumer warranty which might come in handy.

What We Don’t Like

The price is a little high and the fact that it’s not free shipping makes it even more expensive.

Not everyone needs an industrial styled box blade and having options really helps finding the right attachment for your needs. Imagine trying to pull a 500 pound box blade with your lawn mower =).

If the Agri-Fab 45-0265 Ground-Engaging Attachment Sleeve Hitch Scraper fits your needs then by all means give it a try. We won’t judge.

When it comes to buying a box blades scraper there are a lot of things to consider, pro and cons to look over. Maybe you want to do some light gardening or leveling your driveway. Maybe you only have a lawn mower and need a tow behind or maybe you have an industrial job and need an industrial grade box blade.

We hope this post helped outline of those pros and cons along with helping make a more informed buying decision. Pointing out the differences in quality, need, price, shipping, and warranties.

  • Mel says:

I’ve had a King Kutter box blade for about 5 years now and it still works like a champ. Works wonders on my gravel drive way! Also comes in real handy when it snows.

  • Shaunte says:

Box blades are awesome but if you plan on scraping a drive way nothing beats a land leveler!

  • Daniela says:

I know the Brinly Sleeve Hitch Tow Behind Box Scraper isn’t the best of quality and doesn’t compare to something like the King Kutter’s box blade but it’s perfect to pull behind a lawnmower. After all I’m afraid my little John Deere mower can’t lift the King Kutters box blade.

  • Pedro says:

Everything Attachments does make some awesome equipment but the wait time kills it. Although the King Kutter box blade is pretty dang awesome as well and normally easier to get.

  • Betsy says:

Awesome article and I would have to agree that the box blade is one of the best tractor attachments you can buy. If you own a tractor it’s well worth the investment to get a good box blade. I mostly scrape my drive way and make / clean trails with mine but have used it to move debris, scrape snow, and move dirt piles. A tractor Grapple is another great tractor attachment. Bradco and Everything Attachments makes an awesome grapple but go for a box blade first.

  • Melvin says:

I live up north and with all the snow we get I’ve been really considering getting a box blade to scrap snow out of the driveway. Haven’t decided if I want a scrap blade or a box blade. I’m sure a box blade has more uses but as far as I can think of scraping will be my only use so got to think it over. Thanks again for the post.

  • Tobias says:

Diffidently consider the quality of the steel such as the King Kutter box blade is made super strong compared to those cheaper quality box blades. They will end up bending and cause all sort of issues. Try smoothing out the ground with a dented blade. It’s not pretty lol.

  • Anthony says:

Do not use the Agri-Fab 45-0265 Ground-Engaging Attachment on any sort of powerful mower or you’ll end up bending it in no time. For a small Pony mower it might not be that big of a deal but my Husqvarna MZ61 Zero turn mower apparently was to powerful for it. Either that or it wasn’t made to move much dirt.
