Best Ski & Snow Pant Buyers Guide For 2021-2022

Questions & Answers:

What is better – snow pants or snow bibs?

You have probably observed that we included both pants and bibs in our guide and are now wondering what option you should stick with. While both of them work great with skiing and snowboarding, there are a few differences one has to keep in mind in order to make the right choice. As for the ski pants, they are the most common pick of the majority of the population.

This is true due to them appearing much earlier on the market and thus people becoming quickly accustomed to their concept. Whether your plans involve resort snowboarding or backcountry skiing, snow pants will do the job well. They are easy to put on and take off, and they come in a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes. That said, they have a smaller coverage area and are more prone to allowing the snow to reach your body in case of a fall.

Bibs, on the contrary, provide much better coverage and thus act as a great barrier between you and the wet and cold substances. Besides, they keep your whole body warm due to the extra layers built into their upper body fabric. The fit can also be easily customized as the bibs usually have adjustable straps that are secured over your shoulders. Bibs do, however, have their cons. One of them is the bulkiness that not everyone is willing to deal with.

The other is the difficulty of taking them off when you have to go to the bathroom. And lastly, it will take you some time to get used to using the built-in straps. Basically, if you plan on spending a lot of time in the snow exploring offbeat routes, bibs are the way to go.

Should I choose insulated or uninsulated pants?

You might assume that insulated snow pants are by definition a smarter choice than the uninsulated pants. That could not be further from the truth. The two types of pants are equally reliable if worn for the right purpose. Surely, insulated pants have a synthetic lining to make them warmer in cold climates.

Those with poor blood circulation or those who plan on embarking on a week-long trip in the snowy mountains will find them to be the most suitable for their particular circumstances. Even so, the extra lining comes with its cons including the excessive bulkiness, decreased breathability and the risk of getting sweaty way too quickly. This is where the uninsulated, also known as softshell pants, come into play.

They are still water-resistant enough to not let the snow be absorbed by the pants, but not thick to cause the sweat build-up on your legs. Divided into two-layered and three-layered pants, the former uninsulated models include either a face fabric with a waterproof membrane, while the latter incorporate a water-resistant layer in between the tough face material and a thin mesh or fleece lining on the inside. Both of the options provide enough warm to ski and snowboard at the resort without getting overheated. Colder weather conditions, however, are not ideal for the uninsulated type of snow pants.

How important is waterproofing for my ski pants?

Just like water is essential for fish, water-resistance is crucial for ski pants. After all, a high waterproofing rating is what differentiates snow pants from everyday work pants. Since ski pants are constantly exposed to – you guessed it – snow, manufacturers embed into them a waterproof membrane as a top layer.

This prevents them from absorbing water. Some of the companies took it a step further and added a Durable Water Repellent treatment to keep the moisture at bay. Fully taped seams and zippered pockets also play a big role in providing extra protection to the overall water-resistance.

If resort skiing and snowboarding constitute a part of your snow sports plan, choose the hardshell snow pants that offer the maximum amount of waterproofness. On the contrary, in case backcountry skiing is your cup of tea, then partial waterproofing will do the trick as a relatively thin fabric and mobility are your biggest priorities.

What should I layer underneath my ski clothing?

Layering underneath your ski clothes is just as important if not more important as choosing the right gear. For this reason, you have to consider investing in some high-quality underwear or better thermal clothing to keep your body warm throughout the entire skiing trip. Whether it is ColdPruf or Terramar, make sure you wear a layer or two on a cold day.

You should pay attention to the fabric your layers are made of and pick the ones that will provide you with the maximum warmth like synthetic or wool. If you are on a budget, synthetic will work great, whereas if you are able to splurge on clothing, choose the warmth-retaining wool, specifically the merino wool.

Coming in different thicknesses, take into account the circumstances you will be in so that you would be able to choose the suitable for you thickness. A rule of thumb states that lightweight models are the best for backcountry scenarios, while the heavier models work well with the resort weather conditions.

How to pick the perfectly fitting pair of snow pants?

Although everyone has his own idea of how clothing has to fit, there is a general guideline when it comes to
choosing the right fit for snow pants. If you are a beginner or simply stick with the resort type of skiing,
fit in between tight and baggy will suit you well. You don’t want your ski pants to cling onto your body or be
so loose you will feel the cold reaching your bones.

If, however, you are an experienced backcountry skier who often finds himself uphill hiking, a tight fit is your best bet. You want a pair of ski pants that would not add weight or restrict your movements. Lastly, park skiers and snowboarders should opt for loose-fitting snow pants that would give them enough space to wear a few layers underneath.
