Best Top Rated Garden Tillers Buyers Guide

Before we get into our Best Top Rated Garden Tillers Reviews lets go over a few things to help you make the best decision for your garden. As easy as it would be to just say that the Earthwise Electric Tiller is the absolute best tiller for your garden would be a big mistake because while one garden rototiller might be the perfect tiller for me it might not be the perfect tiller for you.

That’s what this Best Top Rated Garden Tillers Buyers guide is here to help you figure out. As an example if you are planning on starting a mid to large size garden on some tough unbroken ground then you’ll really want to be looking at the real tine tillers.

On the other hand if you are just looking for something light weight for a small simple garden with soft soil then an electric garden tiller might be the perfect tiller for you. There’s a number of things to consider before deciding on which tiller will work best for you and it all starts with your garden.

It’s All About Your Garden

That’s right it’s all about your garden. Obviously if you are planning a huge garden then you might even want to consider a tractor tiller. As the tillers in the garden tiller review are mainly geared towards small to mid sized hobby gardens.

So if you are planning on small to mid sized hobby garden then read on as you are in the right place. The question is exactly what size of a garden do you plan on having. Because if you plan on having a mid sized garden you’ll want to consider getting a gas powered tiller due to the fact that they are larger and cover more area in a shorter amount of time.

On the other hand if you are looking at planting a small garden then the electric garden tiller might work out just fine.

Next consider the ground type. I wouldn’t recommend tilling unbroken ground that’s as hard as a rock with an electric tiller even if it’s a small garden. In that case you’ll want to go with a gas powered tiller or at least rent one for a first pass. Another option would be to have someone you know that owns a more powerful tiller help you get started by tilling the unbroken ground first.

Seed type is also important due to the fact that some seeds need to be deeper in the soil than others. If you are planting large seeds such as watermelon for example you’ll need to dig deeper than you would if you would planting smaller seeds such as dill or lettuce.

Gas Powered Tillers Vs Electric Powered Tillers

Gas powered tillers vs electric power tillers which is better? Well they both are better for the right situation. Lets say you have a small garden and soft soil than the electric powered garden tiller would be an awesome choice.

However if you have a mid sized garden and more of a clay type soil then you might be better off with a gas powered garden tiller. Gas powered garden tillers are more powerful than their electric counter parts, but they can also be harder to handle, harder to start and a lot more noisy.

Electric powered tillers tend to be less noisy and lighter making them easier to handle for some people. You never have to worry about running out of gas or having gas spill into your garden. While electric powered tillers aren’t as strong as the gas powered tillers they are by no means weak and are perfect if the conditions are right.

Also keep in mind if using a corded electric powered garden tiller be sure not to use over 150 feet of extension cord or you could damage the motor. For anything over 150 feet you’ll want to use either a gas powered or battery powered tiller.

Front Tine Tillers Vs Rear Tine Tillers

As the name indicates Front tine tillers have the tines located in the front of the wheels with the engine placed above while rear tine tillers are behind the wheels with the engine being in front.

Also front tine tillers rotate in a forward direction only and normally cost less than rear tine tillers. Front tine tillers word great on soft soil or already tilled ground yet easier to handle and maneuver.

With rear tine tillers the wheels are self propelled and the tines may rotate in either direction depending on the model. Actually some models have the ability to rotate in both directions allowing you more control, quicker and easier manipulation of to soil.

2 Cycle Vs 4 Cycle

Gas powered 2 cycle vs 4 cycle engines. You’ll find that most gas powered garden tillers are going to have either 2 Cycle or 4 cycle engine, both with advantages and disadvantages.

The 2 cycle engines will typically cost less and be lighter in weight, on the other hand 4 cycle engines are more efficient and tend to last longer. It’s true that the 2 cycle engines will give more of a power boost although the 4 cycle engines will last you longer and not wear as fast.

Garden Tiller Tires and Handle Bars

Garden tiller tires are a lot of the time overlooked, yet can make a big difference when it comes to making your garden life much easier. Generally speaking for rear tine tillers you want to look for around 13 inch pneumatic tires with good grips. This will help allow you to move the tiller in the rough terrain with ease.

For smaller gas power tillers and electric power tillers having adjustable tires can make a world of difference or at least having tires.

While not as important handle bars are at least worth looking at. For example if you plan on tilling for long periods of time than having adjustable handle bars will keep your arms from getting as sore and perhaps allow you to till a bit longer.

Hope this Best Top Rated Garden Tiller Buyers Guide has helped out some and at least given you some idea about what type of garden tillers you should look for. With that said lets move on to our top garden tiller choices.

  • Auxiliary Handle with Comfortable From Grip

Not only is this tiller the best seller in Power Tillers, there are thousands of customer reviews and an extremely high star rating. Reading how surprised customers were at the power the Earthquake electric tillers put out was amazing. Interesting fact is that 6 out of 10 of Amazon’s best sellers in power tillers are electric tillers!

Customers where also extremely please with the battery life. While the batter life varies depending on type and depth of soil you are using it on, you’ll be shocked at just how long it lasts. Although it never hurts to have a spare battery charging for backup.

What We Liked

There’s a lot we really like about the Earthwise TC70040 11 Inch 40 Volt Lithium Ion Cordless Electric Tiller / Cultivator from the flip down wheels, to the durability this tiller provides.

While it’s a bit on the light side that also makes it easy to move around just make sure you are paying attention in case you hit a rock. It likes to jump. The width is a perfect size for smaller gardens and not to bad for mid size gardens.

What We Don’t Like

Only real complaint we have isn’t really with this tiller but actually with the cost of the spare batteries. The battery is about half the cost of the tiller! Ouch.

Summary

It’s true there are a number of excellent Electric powered tillers in this list but the Earthwise TC70040 is our top choice and for good reason. It’s not only a great price but and awesome product. Don’t just take our advice, read through some of the reviews on Amazon and see for yourself.

Sun Joe TJ603E 16 Inch 12 Amp Electric Tiller and Cultivator

Sun Joe TJ603E 16 Inch 12 Amp Electric Tiller and Cultivator

To be clear this is an electric tiller but a corded one not a battery powered tiller as the Earthwise tiller listed above. With that said this would be our top choice for corded electric tillers.

Keep in mind that electric tillers will never have the power of a gas powered tiller however if you have a small to mid sized tiller and looking for something light weight and easy to handle to get the job done, the Sun Joe TJ603E Electric tiller is worth taking a look at.

Even though it’s a corded electric tiller you’ll be blown away at how well the Sun Joe tiller performs. Easily manage weeds and till up your garden in minutes, preparing to plant seeds before you know it.

It’s pretty easy and straight forward when in comes to putting it together and only takes about 10 minutes to assemble. When it’s time to start tilling we do recommend using a 12/3 extension cord as the smaller cords might not be able to handle the current.

Digging down 4-6 inches is a piece of cake and digging down to 8 inches isn’t that bad either, just takes some getting use to as the dirt tends to pile up quickly. You may find that it’s a little bouncy at times as most light weight tillers are but it’s still easy to control.

No more oil and no more gasoline! You won’t find a more environmental friendly garden tiller out there and it’s ETL approved. Not to mention how easy it is to start an electric tiller compared to a gas powered pull string tiller. Nothing worse than pulling a string for 20 minutes trying to start a tiller.

Three position manual wheel height adjustment helps you keep the depth of tilling the same and easier to maneuver. While the foldable handles comes in handy when you have limited storage space.

Features Include:

  • Powerful 12 Amp Motor
  • 16 Inches Tilling Width
  • 8 Inches Tilling Depth
  • 6 Durable Steel Angled Tines
  • Foldable Handles
  • 3 Position Wheel Adjustment
  • Maximum Extension Cord Length 100 ft
  • ETL approved
  • Full 2 Year Warranty

Coming in the number two spot on the best seller’s list for Power Tillers and at a very high star rating tells us a lot. No where near as much as the thousand plus customer reviews gave us though.

It’s always a great idea to read through those to get ideas such as one customer gave. They mentioned how adding 7/8″ hose clamps to each of the 4 connection points on the handle which gave it a lot more stability. Awesome tip there! Another mentioned adding weight helped the tiller dig up those tougher spots.

What We Liked

The power that the Sun Joe TJ603E Electric Tiller puts out is incredible for such a small light weight unit. If you don’t like having a battery operated tiller and still want the benefits of an electric tiller this is the tiller for you.

We also like the width, a 16 inch tilling width seems to be a prefect size for small to mid size garden tilling.

What We Don’t Like

The handle bars aren’t bad but because they wanted to make them foldable they aren’t as solid as we would of liked them to be for a tiller. As we mentioned earlier adding some hose clamps does help but at the same time you shouldn’t have to.

Summary

This is one of the best if not the best corded electric garden tiller you’ll find on Amazon. It’s at a great price and sure beats having to rent and haul a gas powered tiller. Easy to maintain and even easier to start, plug it up and till away.

VonHaus 12.5 Inch 7 Amp Electric Tiller Lawn Cultivator

VonHaus 12.5-Inch 7 Amp Electric Tiller and Garden Lawn Cultivator

Tired of tilling by hand then give the VonHaus 12.5 Inch 7 Amp Electric Tiller Lawn Cultivator a try. It’s handles are similar to the Sun Joe TJ603E and the overall tilling width is a little narrower, great for getting in those smaller areas.

The VonHaus 12.5 Inch 7 Amp Electric Tiller is another one of our top choices for corded electric tillers and is perfect for tilling out small flower beds, gardens, or just digging up those pesky weeds.

Easy to assemble and easier to use! No need to worry about running out of gas or trying to pull string start this tiller. Plug it in and till away. That’s one of the things you’ll really love about these corded electric tillers. They are so easy to just get out and use.

Why waste valuable time trying to crank your tiller when you can be out there tilling. If you have a small garden or flower bed and you’ve used a gas power in the past your skepticism will be put to rest. Because this powerful 850W double handled tiller will feel more powerful and do a better job.

Electric Tillers such as the VonHaus are designed specificity for tilling up those small gardens. Equipped with a safety cut out protection switch which stops the motor to prevent damage to the blades.

Features Include:

  • Powerful 850 Watt Motor
  • Impressive 8.6 Inch Tilling Depth
  • 12.5 Inches Wide
  • 4 Robust Steel Tines
  • Safety Cut Out Protection Switch

Is the VonHaus 12.5 Inch 7 Amp Electric Tiller better than a gas powered tiller? Absolutely! When it comes to small gardens electric tillers are just so much easier to work with.

What We Liked

The light weight and double handles makes this tiller super easy to control. While the safety cut out protection switch is there in case you run into one of those thick roots that won’t give quick.

What We Don’t Like

The little clips used to hold the cords don’t really work that well and tend to pop off the tiller often. Simple fix is to use zip ties as they work a lot better anyway.

Summary

If you are in the market for a simple easy to use electric tiller is a great contender. It’s also the lowest priced of Our Top Choices in Best Rated Electric Garden Tillers. Cheapest in price not in over all quality though.
The VonHaus 12.5 Inch 7 Amp Electric Tiller is a great tiller at a great price.

Greenworks 10 Inch 8 Amp Corded Tiller 27072

Greenworks 10-Inch 40V Cordless Cultivator

The Greenworks 10 Inch 8 Amp Corded Tiller 27072 is actually just as good if not better than the VanHaus corded electric tiller. Both tillers are running a powerful electric motors which really helps prep those garden or flower beds.

The biggest differences between the VanHaus in the Greenworks 10 Inch 8 Amp Corded Tiller 27072 are the handles as the Greenworks tiller uses a handle bar similar to the Earthwise tiller. It’s really a matter of personal opinion whether you prefer the double handles or the single handle bar.

If you don’t like working with a corded tiller or the area you need to till happens to be more than 150 feet away from a power outlet you might want to give Greenworks battery powered tiller. It’s a bit more expensive but works wonders when a cord just won’t reach.

Features Include:

  • Powerful 8 Amp Motor
  • Four 8 Inch Forward Rotating Tines
  • 8.25 Inches to 10 Inched Adjustable Tilling Width
  • 5 Inches Adjustable Tilling Depth
  • Adjustable Height Wheels
  • Foldable Handle

Tilling can be a good work out and for some the gas powered tillers can be a bit to much. That’s where the light weight electric tillers can save you a lot of aches, pains and a good bit of troubles.

Looking over the customer reviews we can see why they offer high ratings and high value reviews as the customers are very satisfied with the
Greenworks 10 Inch 8 Amp Corded Tiller 27072.

A few complaints about the instructions not being very helpful and say it’s easier to just look at the images on the box. As with most of the negitive comments about electric tillers you’ll find people stating how it’s not powerful or it broke after the first use.

I’m sure some there are times when someone just gets a defective unit. At the same time there are cases in which it’s more of a user error to put it nicely.

What We Liked

Having a handle bar instead of doubles handles give customers options which is nice. The Greenworks 10 Inch 8 Amp Corded Tiller 27072 is well built and sturdy for it’s size. If you’ve used Greenworks products before you already know it’s a brand and they stand behind their products.

What We Don’t Like

Greenworks as with most of the corded electric tillers need to make it clear on the box and instructions about the types of cords to use. It seems that most of the time when these products stop working it was due to using the wrong gauge extension power cord or trying to extend the cord further than recommended.

There really should be a notice on Amazon’s product page stating that information to help prevent such problems.

Summary

As for the Greenworks corded electric tiller it’s a great tiller and will do an amazing job tilling up soil. Perfect size for small gardens or flower beds around your house and for those just out of reach for an extension cord be sure to check out the battery powered version.

Mantis 7250-00-03 Electric Tiller

 Mantis 7250-00-03 Electric Tiller

This is our most expensive choice in our top choices in best rated electric garden tillers. Which is also why it’s at the bottom of the list. Even though it’s more expensive it’s still a great buy.

It’s also the only tiller in this list with adjustable speeds. The Mantis 7250-00-03 Electric Tiller has a 3 Speed 540 watt motor. Each speed designed for specific purposes such as one speed setting for digging, one for weeing, and one for cultivating.

Having the three different speed settings allows you to have more control over the type of tilling you are doing. Plus it saves on where and tear on the motor adding longevity to the tiller giving you a lot of extra years of use.

Another reason for the higher cost is this the Mantis 7250-00-03 Electric Tiller is the depth this tiller will dig. With the help of it’s unique curvy tines you’ll be able to dig as much as 10 inches tilling depth. That should give the roots of any plant or vegetable seed enough room for growth.

Features Include:

  • 3 Speed 540 Watt Motor
  • Weighs only 21 Pounds
  • 9 Inch Tilling Width
  • 10 Inch Tilling Depth
  • Unique Curvy Tines
  • Foldable Handles

Another feature not listed above is how quiet this tiller is. Just another added bonus to owning an electric powered garden tiller. Well that and the fact that your cloths won’t reek of that gas and exhaust smell you get from using a gas powered garden tiller.

Having a 9 inch tilling width has it’s advantages. You’ll have no problem tilling those narrow or uniquely shaped flower beds next to the house or along the drive way.

What We Liked

What we like most about the Mantis 7250-00-03 Electric Tiller is the fact that it has 3 speed settings and the ability to till at a 10 inch depth. The light weight and quite motor are also an added plus.

What We Don’t Like

Obviously the cost of this tiller is pretty high compared to the others. For the cost we feel that the double handles could be a bit sturdier. However keeping this as light as possible was one of Mantis’s goals which they did an excellent job at.

Summary

Overall the Mantis 7250-00-03 Electric Tiller is truly a great product and if you have the extra money can choose this tiller you’ll be extremely happy with the tilling results. You may find yourself outside just looking for something to till so you can use it.

The Earthquake MC43 Cultivator with 43cc Viper engine is highly rated on Amazon and has plenty of customer reviews. Be sure to glance over a few of them as there are a lot of 5 star ratings to comb through.

What We Liked

We like the fact that even though it’s light weight it still has some great digging power and easy to control. Reverse the tines and you’ll get a more aggressive dig.

What We Don’t Like

While the grips on the handles aren’t bad it would be nice if they were a bit more cushioned. The pull string is a little on the thin side and shouldn’t be a problem for most but we could see this being an issue down the road.

Summary

Overall the Earthquake MC43 Cultivator with 43cc Viper engine is an awesome machine and our top pick for gas powered front tine garden tillers. If it’s a gas powered front tine tiller you are looking for this is the one you’ll want to be focused.

Schiller Grounds Care Mantis 4 Cycle Tiller Cultivator 7940

Schiller Grounds Care Mantis 4-Cycle Tiller Cultivator 7940

The Schiller Grounds Care Mantis 4 Cycle Tiller Cultivator 7940 is pretty much tied for our top choice and the only reason it’s not first is because of the price. It’s a bit more expensive yet you get what you pay for and it’s well worth it.

Why does this tiller cost more well for starters it’s packing on a powerful 4 cycle Honda engine in this super lightweight tiller. Being that it’s a 4 cycle engine you’ll get a lot more efficient garden tiller than a 2 cycle.

The gas and oil are separate unlike a 2 cycle engine, so you’ll only need to add gas when operating. Just make sure to change the oil out every 3-4 months depending on usage.

You have full control of the throttle at the tip of your fingers giving you infinite speed control and ease of operation. Hold in the throttle and dig down to a depth of 10 inches or ease up and till up along the top.

You’ll be breaking through hard packed soil and clay like it’s nothing and turning clumps of dirt into perfect planting soil with ease. Spending minutes instead of hours prepping your seed beds. Your garden will be up and ready in no time.

Features Include:

  • 4 Cycle Honda 25cc Engine
  • Weighs 24 lbs
  • Finger Controlled Throttle
  • 9 Inch Tilling Width
  • 10 Inch Tilling Depth
  • Kickstand
  • Foldable Handles
  • Soft Flared Handle Grips
  • Lifetime Tine Guarantee
  • 5 Year Consumer Warranty

While the Schiller Grounds Care Mantis 4 Cycle Tiller Cultivator 7940 doesn’t have wheels it’s super light weight making it easy to move around and has a handy kickstand to hold the tiller upright when not in use.

This Schiller tiller is not only highly rated with over a few hundred reviews, it’s an Amazon’s Choice product. Easy to assemble and even easier if you watch the video on their site or do a search for one on Youtube.

If you look over the reviews you’ll notice how customers were amazed at the quality and worked better than expected while having no regrets with their purchases.

What We Liked

What we like most about the Schiller Grounds Care Mantis 4 Cycle Tiller Cultivator 7940 is that it has a 4 cycle engine. You’ll get a lot more use out of a 4 cycle engine than a 2 cycle. Another nice feature is the lifetime guarantee on the tines.

What We Don’t Like

Even though the Schiller Mantis tiller is super lightweight and there is a handy kickstand we would really like to see some wheels on this thing.

Summary

Honestly if you don’t mind spending the extra money this is a better buy than the Earthquake tiller. You’ll not find a more powerful garden tiller that is as durable and as lightweight as this Mantis tiller. On the other hand if you prefer a 2 Cycle then check the the Mantis 7920 2 Cycle Tiller Cultivator.

Troy-Bilt TB146 EC 29cc 4-Cycle Cultivator with JumpStart Technology

roy-Bilt TB146 EC 29cc 4-Cycle Cultivator with JumpStart Technology

The Troy-Bilt TB146 EC 29cc 4-Cycle Cultivator with JumpStart Technology is another great little 4 cycle engine garden tiller. Built by an American company that’s been around for more than 75 years, Troy-Bilt is a well known brand.

Troy-Bilt designed the TB146 EC to be a powerful and versatile cultivator making it easy to cultivate flower beds and vegetable gardens.

Like all 4 cycle engines there’s no need to mix gas and oil. While the 29cc engine powers a die-cast 40:1 gearbox which turns six premium eight bladed tines.

Those tines are adjustable and can be set to various widths to allow you to till and de-weed in the middle of your garden. For example you can set it to a narrow width of 6 inches to get in between the really tight spots or set it to 12 inches if you planted your flowers or crops in a wider garden.

Starting the Troy-Bilt TB146 EC is super easy for a pull string tiller thanks to the JumpStart Technology. In part because you can use the Troy-Bilt Drill Bit which allows you to turn any power drill into a jump start engine starter. This can really save your arm from having to pull start your tiller.

Features Include:

  • 4 Cycle 29cc Engine
  • 5 Inch Tilling Depth
  • 6 Forward Rotating 8 Inch Premium Steel Tines
  • 6 – 12 Inch Adjustable Tilling Width
  • Spring Assist JumpStart technology
  • Foldable Handle Bars
  • 2 Year Limited Warranty

You’ll find a mixed bag of reviews on this tiller yet it still has a great rating with a good amount of customer reviews. Effective and easy to use, A must have if you love gardening, Just what I needed for a small garden and raised beds are just a few of what others had to say.

These light weight tillers are great for anyone who has a hard time handling the heavier rear tine tillers. They are still going to bounce around as all tillers will but due to the lightweight they are much easier to control.

What We Liked

JumpStart Technology is the main reason Troy-Bilt TB146 EC 29cc 4-Cycle Cultivator with JumpStart Technology made it on our list. I personally am not a fan of the pull string starter so this little device is a must have.

What We Don’t Like

It’s not a bad price, but we think the quality could be better and you would be better off getting the Schiller Grounds Care Mantis unless you think you would really make use of the JumpStart Technology.

Summary

The Troy-Bilt TB146 EC 29cc 4-Cycle Cultivator isn’t a bad tiller it’s just not the best. As we mentioned the main thing really going for this tiller is the ability to start it with a power drill and for some that can really make a difference and be extremely helpful.

Champion 22-Inch Dual Rotating Front Tine Tiller

Champion 22-Inch Dual Rotating Front Tine Tiller with Storable Transport Wheels

The Champion 22-Inch Dual Rotating Front Tine Tiller is the largest tiller on our Top Rated Front Tine Garden Tillers under $500 list. Figured it was worth adding a tiller that was geared more towards the mid size gardens.

While the Champion tiller works great on small gardens it’s a lot easier to maneuver in mid sized garden beds. You can adjust the tiller down to a 16 inch tilling width for those tighter rows.

With a powerful 212cc 4 cycle engine you’ll be able to till up unbroken ground without a struggle and with a max width of 22 Inches you’ll have it done in half the time it would take you with a smaller tiller.

Dual Direction Tilling really helps you till up those dry and tough spots that gives most tillers a hard time. With the dual direction tilling you’ll be able to easily till any type of soil. Yet another reason this tiller makes our list.

Features Include:

  • Dual Direction Tilling Rotation
  • Powerful 212cc 4 Cycle Engine
  • Easy To Adjust Depth Gauge
  • 8 Inch Transport Wheels
  • 8 Inch Tilling Depth
  • 16 – 22 Inch Tilling Width
  • 13.8 Inch Heavy Duty Hardened Steel Tines
  • EPA Certified & CARB Compliant
  • 2 Year Limited Warranty

Even though the Champion 22-Inch Dual Rotating Front Tine Tiller has an extremely high star rating on Amazon there were only a small number of customer reviews at the time of this article. Out of those reviews customers were very pleased.

A few even had missing parts or defected parts and still gave a high rating because of the customer service they received from Champion. Customer service tells you a lot about a company and it’s products. That’s one less thing you’ll have to worry about if you choose to go with this tiller.

What We Liked

With the Champion tiller it’s all about the Dual Direction Tilling. The Champion 22-Inch Dual Rotating Front Tine Tiller is basically a high end tiller at the low end cost.

Also love the fact they Champion offers great customer support, not that want to use it just knowing that it’s there is awesome. Champion also offers lifetime technical support from their dedicated experts.

What We Don’t Like

We noticed there a few of the customers mentioned the wheels being bent on arrival which seems odd given that the wheels seem to be made to support this tiller easily. Nonetheless Champion resolved their issues quickly. Great job by Champion.

Summary

You might say that this tiller is overkill for a small garden and more suited towards a mid size garden and that’s true to a point. It really depends on what you consider a small garden.

One thing you really want to consider is the weight of this tiller being 120 pounds could be a bit much for some people to handle. At the same time the weight can be helpful digging up those hard spots.

If nothing else you can expect to get many years of use out of this tiller.

According to a number of reviews the Southland SRTT196E Rear Tine Tiller is a Beast! Built to last and dig through the toughest of terrain. It’s highly rated and highly recommended with plenty of great reviews.

The perfect tiller for mid sized gardens and flower beds. The Southland Rear Tine tiller uses a forward and reverse gear drive system saving you time from having to turn around as much.

What We Liked

Great quality by a great company. The tilling power that this tiller provides is nothing less than amazing and you’ll be simply amazed at how easy this tiller digs up anything you put in front of it.

What We Don’t Like

With the Southland Rear Tine Tiller being our top choice for rear tine tillers there’s nothing we don’t like about it. As with all rear tine tillers they are heavy so expect a pretty good work out when using them. However you can expect to get your money worth with this tiller.

Summary

If you are planning on digging up unbroken ground to plant a mid sized garden or a mid sized flower bed and want a rear tine tiller for the job, this is the tiller you’ll want to order.

Husqvarna CTR900L 17 Inch Rear Tine Tiller

Husqvarna CRT900L 17 in 12.51cc Briggs and Stratton Rear-Tine Tiller

The Husqvarna CTR900L 17 Inch Rear Tine Tiller is another beast when it comes to rear tine tillers. Using a well known brand such as the Briggs & Startton for the engine really helps sell this rear tine tiller. As if the name Husqvarna really needs any help.

Like the Southland SRTT196E Rear Tine Tiller the Husqvarna CTR900L is designed for mid sized gardens and flower beds around your house. Will till up unbroken ground with ease. Rocks, roots, nor vines will slow this tiller down.

The counterweight on the front keeps Husqvarna CTR900L firmly planted on the ground although we recommend taking it easy in reverse as the counterweight tends to cause divots if the throttle is up to high.

Features Include:

  • Briggs & Stratton 900 Series OHV Engine
  • 17 Inch Tilling Width
  • 6.5 Inch Tilling Depth
  • Counter Rotating Tines
  • Chain / Gear Transmission
  • Forward & Reverse Gears
  • Front Counterweight

The Briggs & Stratton 900 series engine is not only powerful but very fuel efficient hardy using any gas. Even though it used a pull cord to start it’s fairly easy to start.

Counter rotating tines are tines that move counter clock wise to the wheels nor do they rely on the wheels motion for cutting speed. Because of this you are able to dig soil such as compacted clay or dry hard ground with a lot less vibration and bouncing essentially making the tiller easier to control.

What We Liked

Husqvarna being a well respected brand included with a Briggs & Stratton brand you end up with an awesome Husqvarna CTR900L tiller.

What We Don’t Like

The tine enclosure could have a better design to allow for easier access. Reading over the reviews there are a number of complains about the shear pins breaking easily. Also not impressed with the tilling depth when compared to the Southland SRTT196E Rear Tine Tiller.

Summary

Husqvarna fan or not you’ll be impressed with how well and easy this tiller gets the job done. I wouldn’t recommend this tiller for smaller gardens as it might be to hard to move around and get between the smaller rows, however if you need to till up unbroken dry hard soil or rocky turf this is the tiller for you.

Yardmax YT4565 Dual Rotating Rear Tine Tiller

YARDMAX YT4565 Dual Rotating Rear Tine Tiller 208Cc Briggs and Stratton

The Yardmax YT4565 Dual Rotating Rear Tine Tiller is very similar to the Husqvarna CTR900L tiller. Both equipped with a powerful Briggs & Stratton engine more than capable enough to shred through tough compressed soil like butter, make that frozen butter.

One thing setting these two tillers apart is that the Yardmax YT4565 is a dual rotating rear tine tiller instead of the counter rotating tines. As mentioned earlier in this article, dual rotating offers more flexibility and can work both in both forward and reverse blade motions.

You’ll have no issues trenching through any type of terrain with the agriculture style 13 Inch pneumatic wheels and with 7 different depth adjustments you’ll be able to get the right depth for what ever type of seed you plant.

Features Include:

  • Briggs & Stratton 208cc Powered Engine
  • 18 Inch Tilling Width
  • 7 Depth Adjustments
  • 6.5 Inch Tilling Depth
  • 13 Inch Self Sharpening Tines
  • 13 Inch Pneumatic Wheels
  • Front Counterweight
  • 2 Year Residential Warranty

Another similar feature is the front counterweight. Controlling the tiller while digging up rocky ground or ground with lots of roots becomes much easier having that front counterweight.

There is some assembly required so be sure to keep the instructions. The Yardmax YT4565 is pretty heavy as most rear tine tillers, so you might want to have some spare hands around to help out. If you are worried that you won’t be able to assemble correctly you could always do a search on YouTube.

What We Liked

The Yardmax isn’t as well known as Husqvarna but it’s got a pretty good rating and good reviews. It’s also the lowest priced rear tine tiller on our top rated rear tine tillers list.

What We Don’t Like

After reading over some of the reviews it seems the gear selector may not always align properly. In some cases it was an easy fix in others not so easy.

Summary

If you are considering either the Yardmax YT4565 or the Husqvarna CTR900L it really comes down to counter rotating tiller vs dual rotating tiller. Well that and price.

What We Liked

This is an easy choice as we absolutely love the Electric Start and would love to see that feature in all the gas powered tillers.

What We Don’t Like

As you can expect with the Electric Start feature comes a higher price. It’s sad but true. It’s also a more powerful engine which adds to the price as well.

Summary

Yes there are better tillers in this list however if you want a gas powered rear tine garden tiller than the Troy Bilt ES 250cc Gas Powered Electric Start Rear Tine Tiller would be our choice.
