What’s The Best Weed Eater Line To Use For 2022-2023 – Chances are you found this review guide because you got a new weed eater or thinking about getting a new one. Perhaps you are just tired of wasting money on buying weed eater string that just keeps breaking.
Surprisingly most people over look or are just unaware of the differences of week eater lines. After all it’s convenient to just go with what comes standard. Problem is that standard line isn’t always the best and rarely is the most efficient.
The average weed eaters are for the most part designed to use the standard round line at a few different diameters. While round line is decent for trimming light grass there are a lot better options for the thicker harder to trim weeds.
To list a few different types of weed eater lines there is the standard round, square, triangle, multi-sided, twisted, and serrated. We’ll go over each in a minute but one thing to remember is that not all lines fit all weed eaters. With that said you need to read over the owners manual of your weed eater to ensure what will and won’t work with your weed eater.
Different Weed Eater Line Shapes

Round
Round line is one of the most common and basic of weed eater lines and chances are it’s the type that came with your weed eater. As mentioned earlier the round line does a decent job at trimming thin grass and edging.
The round shape uses speed and force to break the blades of grass instead of cutting as a line with sharp edges would do. Normally used for light residential use.
One benefit of using the rounded weed eater line is that it doesn’t break as easy as some of the edged strings. It’s also the cheapest and universally fits in almost all types of weed eaters.
Multi-Sided
Looking to trim some medium to thick weeds or a thick patch of crab grass than the multi-sided line might be what you are looking for. Because of the sharp edges you’ll have a much easier time cutting through the thick stuff.
Multi-Sided lines come in a few different shapes as well such as triangle (3 sided), square (4 sided), star shaped which is 5 – 8 sided. While they are much better for cutting the thicker weeds they also give a cleaner cut. On the other hand they also wear faster than the round line when brushed up against asphalt, brick, concrete or such surfaces.
Be cautious around breakable objects such as pottery and around small trees. As the multi-sided lines can do some major damage if they come in contact.
Twisted / X
If you are looking for the strongest of the bunch the Twisted also known as the X weed eater sting would be what you want to look for. As it’s what most commercial lawn care service providers use and for good reason.
The Twisted weed eater string not only cuts down the thick stuff that other types can’t, it also produces less vibration and noise. While it might not seem like much if you plan to use your weed eater for hours at a time it can make a big difference. On the down side it can also be a bit more expensive.
In fact Twisted weed eater string is made up of two to four round strings twisted together. Which means you are not only are you getting a good cut but getting the benefit of rounded line multiplied.
Serrated / Jagged
Think of Serrated weed eater line like a steak knife. You want it to be able to cut quick and easy which is exactly what the serrated string does. The jagged edges of a serrated weed eater line can easily cut your weed eating time in half.
Great for cutting medium to thick weeds and grass with a very clean cut. Like the Twisted line the serrated line is generally used in commercial weed eaters. It’s not as strong as the Twisted line but offers a better cut, however if you have some pretty thick weeds you might be better of going with the twisted line.
Picking The Right Weed Eater Line Size
Now that you know about the different shapes of weed eater lines it’s just as important to understand the different sizes. Obviously the thicker the line the more strength the line will offer allowing you to cut the thicker grass.
There are advantages to use the thin lines as well such as the thinner lines do give a cleaner cut. They consume less energy and less gas. Very helpful if you are using a battery powered weed eater. The thin weed eater lines also cause less stress and wear on the weed eater motor.
If you are using the thin line and find that it’s just not getting the job done then it might be worth looking into moving up to a thicker line. Just make sure your weed eater can handle the thicker line so you don’t burn out your weed eater’s motor. The list below should give you a good idea about which type of line you should consider.
- 0.065 – 0.080 Inches : Light work includes grass and thin grass like weeds
- 0.085 – 0.105 Inches : Medium work includes grass and medium thickness weeds
- 0.110 – & Above Inches : Heavy work includes grass and thin weedy brush
Final Thoughts
Back to the question at hand, What is the best weed eater line to use? Ultimately it’s up to what you want to do. Well that and what your weed eat can handle as there is no perfect answer. To be honest sometimes it all comes down to trial and error. That’s really the only way to see what works best for your weed eater and your situation.
If you want to try a line that won’t fit with your weed eater you can try changing out the head. Just keep in mind if your weed eater starts to bog down you might end up blowing the weed eaters motor.
The Ultimate Weed Eater Attachment

After a number of weed eaters and trying out a number of different techniques I found what I believe to be the best solution to weed eater strings. Year after year I would try something different and while some worked okay most of them just kept burning through the lines.
Last year I tried the Shakespeare “Ugly” Head Trimmer and I’ll never go back. As for my weed eater I use the Troy-Bilt 25-cc 2-Cycle 17-in Curved Shaft Gas String Trimmer. It’s not the best but I got a great deal on it at the time. My Troy-Bilt does bog down at times using the Shakespeare “Ugly Head Trimmer but so far it’s managed to keep on ticking.
So what makes the Shakespeare “Ugly” Head Trimmer so awesome? Well for starters I changed out the strings once last year and that was it! Let me tell you I put this thing to the test and cut down some super thick weeds with out any issues. The only thing was that my weed eater was bogging down here and there.
The way the Shakespeare “Ugly” Head Trimmer works is just short of incredible. I’ll admit I never used the plastic blades as the string never broke! Sadly I don’t think this thing would work well with an electric weed eater. It also might not be the best for a battery powered weed eater but would be worth trying.
Again if you have a gas powered weed eater I can’t recommend the Shakespeare “Ugly” Head Trimmer enough. If nothing else I hope you learned a little bit about the different types of weed eater lines.
